If you are looking to step back in time with grace and space then this fine vessel may be worth a glance. She hails from a bygone era where her orginal owners would have certainly been wealthy socialites or millionaires or both, we know this was no ordinary mans vessel in the late 20's she was reserved for the rich and famous. Frankly looking at todays prices with her pedigree she still commands a very handsome resale value, having owned her for a few years I have carefully followed the market and can tell you that currently to the best of my knowledge she has 1 sister ship currently for sale for $400,000 by owner on the boatsforsaleonline. There have been 2 of these desirable vessels sold in the last 2 yrs priced at $120K and 200K respectively, the former needing work and the latter being clean and part of an estate sale. There is an obvious reason why she is priced as low as she is for a vessel of her pedigree and that is simply she does need to be repowered completely and that will require a lot of thought ,frankly she can be repowered for under $10,000 with 2 pre-owned diesels with shafts rudders etc ,however I would caution whoever buys her to really think it through as she has awesome potential if completed properly, I have had an Australian shipwright who flew over here and went through her carefully for me give me some suggestions but he was impressed by the quality of the restoration done, simple things like the fact that all the ribs that were replaced were laminated together and not solid pieces cut and sistered. I do have the name of the yard that performed all the work and they are highly respected in Maryland for wood boat restoration not cheap but good, having spoken with the orginal yard manager who was aware of the work done he informed me that the previous owner had spent in the region of $90,000 on work most of it being done on the hull and transom . Yes there are many large wooden boats with great pedigree for sale, yes they are priced from $5,000 all the way up to telephone numbers (pardon the expression), I know that you can many find boats right now and many that have been sold over the last few months for similar money HOWEVER there is 1 thing that is clearly evident most of them are project boats as is the Elco, she is not needing planking below the waterline planking nor does she need a few ?? ribs replaced . Any shipwright will tell you that the largest expense in a restoration is the hull and she has had $90,000 spent on this as such does she need work yes. Is she affordable? YES! Will she be sinking? NO WAY! Can you live on her as she is? Yes! Is she going to collapse in the slings when she is hauled due to her poor structure? NO! Her structure is great . I can not tell you how many people walk past her and stop and compliment me on her sleek lines and are amazed when I disclose her true age, I would have to say she has matured like a glass of fine wine, This is 1 of those instances when you are happy to disclose her true age as peoples reactions are amazing, usually they are amazed that she is still intact, floating and looking gorgeous. Sure I could have rolled a quick coat of gloss white paint on her hull sides so she looked amazing when you looked at the photos but frankly I have nothing to hide so you can see exactly how she looks today, the images taken in the water were taken approximately a week ago, prior I had her stored on land for 2yrs where she had her survey and prior to that she was stored in the water undercover for the last 20yrs I know of. I have had numerous offers and suggestions of what she should be pre-owned for, from charter boat for weddings, to a river cruiser and charter boat, she was being pre-owned as a liveaboard prior to my purchasing her, I did have a serious offer last year from a gentleman who had tracked the boat down but I was not intending to sell her last year and we could not come to an agreement on price. He wanted to truck her back to Florida to make her into a floating office for his business on the ICW. He priced $5500 for transportation and that was approximately a year ago, so the price should still be the same as she may be 50 feet long but with her sleek 12 ft beam and a height of just under 13 ft it makes her surprisingly easy to transport. We could not come to agreement as there was a trade involved and like all of us he wanted the max value for the trade but wanted to negotiate with me on the purchase price. To answer the next question, YES I will consider trades wether it be an exotic vehicle, another boat as part payment, a Harley,RV, a condo in Florida, who knows however I am not trading the Elco as a part payment toward someones piece of real estate nothing I have to further pay more money toward, In saying that CASH is KING and obviously I would love to take the cash and move on.I will do my best to give you a brief overview of her layout etc and if we get to that point in the sale or negotiations we can go through the survey together, To give you a brief overview. Her hull is in superb condition below the waterline, there are no through hulls and as a result nowhere for rot and moisture to creep in through through hull fittings, if you put engines etc in you will obviously be changing that, The hull is glassed from the waterline down, a common practice done with commercial fishing boats which adds to their longevity and hence was adopted here. The crucial part in this type of repair is to have the planking replaced and the hull dried out thoroughly 1st and all the correct methods were followed . Her hull sides are in decent shape the woodwork requiring attention are the 2 planks above the deck so yes this means you are not stripping all the hull planking and this can infact be done in the water if required although obviously easier out, it does not affect the hulls integrity. The deck are in great shape as is the canvas, there are some areas that could be recaulked on deck but the deck actually looks in attractive shape. The coachroof has been replaced from front to back but does need to be sealed whether it be by canvas or some type of sealant as the boat has been stored under cover it has not really been an issue before. The layout of the boat has not been altered, As you enter the main salon you can enter from wither Port or Starboard through stained glass period doors, I have taken a picture of 1 of them for you, there are still period lamps etc in the salon area as you head up front there is a double bunk cabin which I assume would have been for the crew behind that is the galley area which will need refinishing as it is very basic the way it is currently laid out. In the engine room under the salon floor there is currently the water heater and a large storage area. As you enter the rear of the boat from the main salon you come down the stairs into the hall way, to starboard there is a bunk storage area cupboards etc. To Port there is a double sized bed cabin and behind that the original head with tub and perios basin/sink. In the aft is a large cabin with 2 twin beds and again period fittings lamps etc. To summarize we have a true classic that has had a substantial amount of money spent on the structure , if you chose to liveaboard then you could basicaly move aboard now , if you were to use her as a charter type boat I would assume organising the repower would be your next priority . All that said she is a worth the effort and there is a lot of equity in her at our selling price . Please feel free to e-mail or call with any questions , if I cannot answer I will return your calls promptly wether they are US or international we will call you back , we can arrange delivery to Port for export however a cradle and shiping to Europe is going to cost a lot of money so please keep that in mind.PLEASE CALL MATT MCKENZIE AT [removed phone] FOR APPOINTMENT TIME OR ADDITIONAL DETAILSListing originally posted at http://www.spreadmyad.com/baltimore/vehicles/boats/[removed phone]-elco-50-flat-top-annapolis-md-38500
